In 2017, after his second venture, Andrés “Andy” Areitio began building an investment thesis and researching the B2B SaaS landscape in Europe. In the course of his research, Areitio discovered PitchBook—and was impressed. With a thesis in hand, Areitio joined TheVentureCity.

Strategic investing of a data-driven fund

Data is at the core of the investment thesis of TheVentureCity, which has an in-house team of data experts that serves the portfolio and investing efforts. Since its inception, they have been successfully building a fund that leverages data to make winning investments.

Achieving success would require access to the best, most robust information on potential investment partners and prospects. After evaluating several tools, TheVentureCity chose PitchBook for limited partner identification and collaboration, market analysis, and due diligence.

“For an emerging fund at that moment, we were very thorough in researching and trialing tools. PitchBook was the best tool we looked at by far. It was a relevant investment for us as we were raising our first fund. I can say now, six years later, it was well worth it.”

PitchBook provides crucial intelligence

Today, TheVentureCity uses PitchBook for all its research, from comparable-company analysis to identifying potential investors for its portfolio and funds. From a more high-level, strategic vantage point, the team relies on PitchBook for “behind-the-scenes” private market intelligence. PitchBook helps the team evaluate opportunities and see where capital is flowing, how valuations are evolving and the size of various rounds in a developing sector.

“In the past, we gathered market intelligence in passing, through conversations with fellow investors, at industry functions, or by reading the news. PitchBook is now a vital part of that knowledge ecosystem. The big-picture, strategic information we get from PitchBook give us an edge,” said Areitio.

Since its early days with PitchBook, TheVentureCity team continues to grow and evolve their use of the platform with the help of PitchBook’s dedicated Customer Success team.

From day one, PitchBook has been super intentional about making sure we get maximum value out of the platform. Our customer success rep really gets to know our business and helps us do more and score big wins. As we grow, PitchBook grows with us.”

Creating success

Since its founding, TheVentureCity has attracted $160 million in assets under management for its strategy in both seed and series A investments. Today, the firm is investing through its second fund. TheVentureCity team says they’d “be on the phone all day” trying to get the information they get quickly and easily from PitchBook. Time is money, and PitchBook is proud to play a part in helping TheVentureCity make every minute count.

To me, a big win is getting good, reliable data with ease. If I’m looking into a potential investment, PitchBook gives me the information and confidence I need to make a smart decision. Similarly, identifying the right investors for our funds, and making sure we can be a fit for them is a big win.”
