PitchBook blog

Your resource for all things PitchBook
A few years ago, PitchBook announced the launch of its redesigned Research Center—an easy-to-use resource for our venture capital, private equity, M&A and emerging tech research. The Research Center's overhaul also included the integration of expanded equity research from PitchBook's parent company, Morningstar

Since then, the volume of Morningstar equity research available through PitchBook has more than doubled—from 130,00 thematic and company-specific reports to nearly 300,000. And new in-platform collaboration features make it easier than ever to save, share, download and make notes on any equity research with relevance to your work.

As a reintroduction to PitchBook's equity research offerings, let’s take a look at what equity research is, the types of equity research available through the platform and how to access it. Plus, we introduce the Chicago-based Morningstar Institutional Equity Research team and their differentiated approach.

What is equity research?

Equity research can take the form of financial analyses, recommendations and other reporting on public and private investment opportunities. The main purpose of equity research is to enable interested firms and professionals to stay well-informed of rapidly evolving industries and cross-market trends that may impact investment strategies. Equity research is compiled by experts who tackle data interpretation, develop investment models and more.

About Morningstar's equity research

PitchBook clients have access to client-specific equity research reports from Morningstar, as well as eight types of thematic research that spans 1,500 equities. The thematic research reports include:

  • Market Outlook: A fundamental, forward-looking commentary of 11 sectors, including basic materials, communication services, consumer cyclical, consumer defensive, energy, financial services, healthcare, industrials, real estate, technology and energy & utilities.
  • Sector Updates: Quarterly reports that provide a succinct overview of notable market trends and accentuate high conviction investment ideas occurring across 11 sectors covered by Morningstar’s equity research analysts.
  • Observer: A closer look at industries, companies and emerging trends with actionable investment ideas. These reports are designed to address and tackle the larger issues that will drive long-term company valuations and assist clients in their own valuation process.
  • Select Presentation: Deep dives into industries, companies, and/or emerging trends.
  • Equity Best Ideas: A compilation of stock ideas looking across sectors, industries and geographies.
  • Stock Picker: Authors evaluate holdings of 26 investment managers to identify trends and outliers among their holdings, as well as any meaningful purchases or sales that took place during the period under examination.
  • Canadian Research Update: Monthly report that provides a bottom-up perspective on the most important trends and factors influencing equity investments for each of the 11 Morningstar sectors that are listed on Canadian exchanges.
  • Moat Framework: An extensive collection of articles that provides readers with conceptual explanations of key moat components and drivers in approximately 70 industries.
